Many records have been set in the Olympic Park, both sporting and cultural. But the park itself, as Munich's landmark and one of the largest event and leisure centres in the world, has also set numerous records in its 50-year history. With a positive result of 5.1 million and eleven open-air concerts with more than 700,000 visitors, Olympic Park Munich GmbH (OMG) achieved historic records in the business year 2023.
'I am delighted and very proud of the entire Olympic Park team that we were able to close 2023 so successfully. The best thing about it was that we were able to do what we do best for twelve months without any closures or event cancellations, which is to offer visitors wonderful experiences,' says Marion Schöne, Managing Director of Olympic Park Munich GmbH, and adds: 'The anniversary year 2022 with the unique European Championships will never be forgotten, but the past year had its very own quality. Lightness and enthusiasm have clearly returned to the Olympic Park.'
In total, the Olympic Park recorded more than 4.5 million visitors in the reporting year 2023 (previous year: 4.4 million): 2.9 million (previous year: 2.6) at 334 events on 596 event days, with a further 1.6 million (previous year: 1.8) visitors to the leisure and tourism facilities.
With eleven sold-out concerts, the Olympic Park enjoyed the best open air season at the Olympic Stadium since 1972! Double shows by Harry Styles and Pink, four shows by Rammstein, one outdoor show each by Depeche Mode, Bruce Springsteen and The Weeknd delighted over 711,500 fans. Not forgetting the Superbloom Festival, which attracted 100,000 visitors in one weekend. Olympiapark München GmbH's own events also offered unique experiences: the MASH action sports festival attracted around 92,000 spectators and thrilled them with breathtaking BMX sports, skateboarding, wakeboarding, street dance for the first time and lots of lifestyle. At the Midsummer Night's Dream, 33,000 visitors enjoyed a great concert programme and a spectacular 30-minute fireworks display. The traditional holiday classics, the Easter Festival (23,000 visitors) and the multi-day Summer Festival with around 350,000 visitors, were also very popular. There was also a packed calendar of concerts in the Olympic Hall and many other events in the Olympic Ice Sports Centre, the Small Olympic Hall and the outdoor facilities.
In 2023, Munich experienced its most successful year for tourism since overnight stays were first recorded. Naturally, the tourism and leisure facilities in the Olympic Park also benefited, with increased visitor numbers leading to higher revenues. All of the facilities operated directly by OMG, as well as external facilities such as the Olympic swimming pool operated by Stadtwerke München, the Sea Life aquarium and the tennis and mini-golf facilities, recorded significant increases in visitor numbers.
'As Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Olympiapark München GmbH, I can only rejoice at the extremely successful year we have had, and of course I would like to thank Marion Schöne and her entire team who have worked so hard to bring the Olympic Park to life. The park once again offered Munich residents and tourists from all over the world a colourful and varied range of events and leisure activities throughout the year, which proved extremely popular. It is particularly pleasing that such a positive economic result was also achieved,' says Mayor Verena Dietl. In fact, the result of Olympiapark München GmbH 2023 reached an all-time high. The annual net profit of €5.1 million was around €4.4 million higher than in the previous year and even exceeded the very good result from 2019. Revenue in the events sector was 107% up on the pre-Corona year and 132% up in the tourism and leisure sector. In addition, €2.42 million was paid to the City of Munich for the lease of the venue.
These facts and figures, as well as many interesting developments and events, can now be read in the annual report of Olympiapark München GmbH, which has been published for the first time in purely digital form as a one-pager on the OMG website.
‚The digital annual report reflects the spirit of the times, is sustainable and opens up even more opportunities to impressively present our company's past financial year in pictures and videos,‘ says Marion Schöne.
