The Men's EHF EURO 2024 is coming to Düsseldorf, Berlin, Mannheim, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne.
The framework for the Men's EHF EURO 2024 is set: this Thursday, the German Handball Federation and the European Handball Federation jointly announced the venues for thrilling handball matches from 10 to 28 January 2024. Düsseldorf is going to be the venue for the opening match with a world record number of spectators. The preliminary round venues of the first Men's EHF EURO with 24 teams and a total of 65 matches in a host country are Berlin, with the German national handball team, as well as Mannheim and Munich. The main round will take place in Cologne – if the DHB team qualifies successfully – and Hamburg. Cologne is also preparing the court for the final round, making it the place where the EHF EURO 2024 dreams come true.
"I expect the EHF EURO 2024 to be of central importance for the status and future of handball," says Michael Wiederer, President of the European Handball Federation. "All in all, we have the best halls and the most enthusiastic handball audience in Europe in Germany. This is also evident every year at the EHF FINAL4 of the EHF Champions League in Cologne."
"This tournament will be a beacon in the decade of handball. Anticipation is already mounting," says Andreas Michelmann, President of the German Handball Federation. "We have succeeded in spreading the locations of the EHF EURO 2024 almost all over Germany, so that we can offer handball a platform everywhere. At this point I would like to express my sincere thanks to the other venues that invested a lot of energy and applied, but unfortunately didn't get their chance this time."
The Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet: "Diligence, fairness and above all fighting spirit – that's what we associate with the sport of handball. So it is only logical that the European Handball Championship in Germany should also come to us in North Rhine-Westphalia! The opening match and the final round will be played in our arenas in Cologne and Düsseldorf. With the great enthusiasm for the sport in our country, we will act as the perfect host for this top-class tournament. And fans can take note already: the European Handball Champion 2024 will be crowned in the number one sports state, North Rhine-Westphalia."
From the idea in 2016, to the award in Glasgow in 2018, to the announcement of the venues today, 10 June 2021: the EHF EURO 2024 started as a visionary project and is truly taking shape. "We are planning the opening match in a football stadium. Düsseldorf should set the scene for a fantastic EHF EURO 2024 with 50,000 fans and a thus successful world record attempt," says Mark Schober, Chairman of the Board of the German Handball Federation. "All arenas hold more than 10,000 spectators. We want to build a great stage for the participating teams and their fans and everyone interested in handball." The German national handball team will begin its journey in Düsseldorf, contest the preliminary round in Berlin and then aim to continue its success on its Cologne home turf from the main round onwards.
"The EHF EURO is the undisputed flagship of our national team competitions. It inspires hundreds of thousands in the halls and millions in front of the TV screens, and it is the platform for our sponsors and partners," says Martin Hausleitner, EHF General Secretary. "The EHF EURO 2024 in Germany has all the prerequisites to set new standards and records in these areas. We are very much looking forward to working with the DHB in the period up to January 2024."
