This is a real sensation - the world elite of Alpine skiing will be gathering in Munich on the start line - or more accurately on the Olympic Hill. On 2nd January 2011, they’ll stand at the starting hut 564 metres above sea level, looking down over thousands of spectators and the tent roof silhouette of the Olympic Park. On the floodlit parallel slalom (start: 4:45 p.m.), the battle is on for vital World Cup points! The 15 best women and men in the overall World Cup rankings, plus one additional starter from the host country via a wildcard, will also be racing on the same day at the same location. That’s something that the audience can only experience in Munich!
The event marks the world premiere of a global sporting competition in Alpine skiing, one which should be taken very seriously, at the Olympic Hill. Advance tickets for adults cost Euro 19, and concessions cost just Euro 11. With this City Event, the FIS is also keen to set up a new series. The Munich audience can consequently look forward to big names such as Maria Riesch or Felix Neureuther. And of course to all the other international top stars that qualify for the race. The exciting duels of woman versus woman and man versus man will be played out in accordance with the official FIS rules on the 200-metre-long race track on the northern side of the Olympic Hill. There can only be one winner, and that will only be decided once the final remaining athletes have cross the finish line. The individual who comes in ahead of all the others will receive 100 World Cup points, just as in Kitzbühel or on any other World Cup race. The audience will have a fantastic view of the action, since the Olympic Lake is being left out for this top event, giving plenty of space for skiing fans.
Over 50,000 visitors on the Olympic Hill have already watched two parallel slaloms in 1986 and 1987. There were plenty of top stars lining up even then, including Marina Kiehl, Erika Hess, Tamara McKinney and many more. However there was only one women’s competition, and no World Cup points. But as a show race, it was a true first, 25 years ago, for a classic winter event to take place in the heart of the city.
After then, they were held more often. To mark the start of the new century, snowboarders held their competitions in the Olympic Park and the free-stylers even earned World Cup points. The international cross-country elite lined up at the start twice – once as the start of the FIS Tour de Ski in the Olympic Stadium. Equally unforgettable, of course, were the spectacular Air&Style events held under the tent roof of the Olympic Stadium. The highest winter event audience recorded so far of over 60,000 spectators awaited Munich's residents at the Red Bull Crashed Ice event in January 2010. This winter sports history of the Olympic Park makes it very clear that spectacular winter sports events are being held successfully in the Olympic Park, even long before the competition for the Olympic Games 2018.
